“Mental Health” Services Offered
The Thought Exchange, LLC
The Thought Exchange offers a cognitive, behavioral, educational model for enhancing emotions and behavior utilizing principles of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) (www.AlbertEllis.org) as the theoretical basis along with the “Stages of Change”, “Motivational Interviewing”, Parts Therapy” and other related models.
Philosophically, The Thought Exchange believes “People Feel and Behave the Way They Think” with a focus on Self-Reliance and Empowerment.
The ABCs of REBT provide a formula for evaluating emotions and behavior, distinguishing between negative unhealthy emotions, negative healthy emotions and positive emotions while providing a process for identifying the specific irrational beliefs (iBs) that cause emotional dis-stress, techniques for disputing and exchanging them for rational beliefs (rBs).
A = Activating Event can be any person, place or thing an individual experiences.
B = Beliefs (Rational rBs/Irrational iBs) about the “A” leads to “C”
C = Consequences (Emotional/Behavioral) for better or for worse depending on whether the beliefs are rational or irrational.
D = Dispute iBs by questioning the belief’s validity
E = Effect of the Disputing of iBs and exchange for rBs leads to a change in emotion and behavior for the better.
An evaluation/assessment of an individual’s emotional and behavioral states using criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental and Substance Disorders (DSM-IV) is conducted from which an individual plan of action will be developed.
Although The Thought Exchange believes mental health issues are largely the result of an individual’s beliefs, other treatment options such as medication are discussed and referrals are made accordingly.
